In terms of mass Shasta Dam is the second largest dam in the United States (Grand Coulee in Washington State is the largest.). With 6.5 million cubic yards of concrete this dam weighs in at 15 million tons. This is a curved concrete gravity-type dam.

In 1938 construction of the dam began and was completed in 1945. It is 3,460 feet long, 883 feet thick at the bottom tapering to 30 feet thick at the top and is 602 feet high. The front of the dam covers 31 acres. The spillway, 487 feet, is the largest manmade waterfall in the world - 3 times higher than Niagra Falls. There are 18 outlets with a maximum capacity of 186,000 cubic feet per second.

Shasta Lake is the largest manmade reservoir in the State of California. when lower water levels expose the shore it feels and looks barren along the 365 miles of shoreline. This dam has a water storage capacity of 4.5 million and drainage of 6,665 square miles.
