Whaleback sits right on the border between New Hampshire and
Maine. It is owned and operated by the town of Kittery, Maine.
It is located just offshore from Fort Foster, and is positioned
to protect the Portsmouth, NH harbor.
The tower was constructed in 1872. It is constructed with
unpainted granite blocks. Today the piercing light sneds out
a revolving DCB-224 airport-style beacon. This lighthouse is
topped with a fourth-order lens. The lightkeeper's living space
is integrated into the tower.
This light is still and active aid to navigation.
