Bicyclists from all over the city of
San Francisco California
gather on the last Friday of every month for a safe communal "ride home" from work up Market Street. These gatherings have become known as "Critical Mass". Lately the group has grown so large (reaching
5000
in July 1997, and regularly surpassing 500 bicyclists) as to attract the attention--and sometimes the ire and gall--of automobile commuters not accustomed to sharing the road with bicyclists. These ad hoc protests have gotten the attention of San Francisco Mayor
Willie Brown
, other local leaders, and
police
. Several solutions have been proposed, ranging from arresting all the riders to larger and wilder protests, but none have met with broad support. The city has finally implemented some bicycle mitigation measures that include the designation of bike lanes on some of the cities streets. It seems that greater support of commuting alternatives must be explored and legislated.
