Craters of the Moon National Monument was legislated as a National Momument in 1924. It is located in south central Idaho, and encompasses 53,440 acres (21,636 hectares). This park is composed of several closely grouped volcanoes. Volcanic activity dates back to 20,000 years ago. It has left behind many intersting geological shapes and formations including tree molds, craters, and cinder cones. The huge lava caves were at one time used by American Indians.
