The GRUMMAN HU-16A ALBATROSS was built as a utility amphibian serving the military for more than thirty years. The Albatross was designed for SAR, patrol, and ASW duties. It gained fame in the Korean War where Albatross crews rescued nearly 1000 United Nations personnel from coastal waters. It performed the same service in Viet Nam until replaced by the
Jolly Green Giant
helicopter.
The planes were equipped with heavy duty deicing boots and static electricity tails for rough weather operations. The HU-16 could also carry light anti-submarine weapons and was used as a coastal-patrol aircraft by the
Marine Corps
and
Coast Guard
. The US Air Force also used the Albatross in service, it was designated as the
U-16
. During the Berlin airlift, U-16 aircraft were assigned to rescue crews who were forced down in Russian territory.
They were built for the military during the late 1940's and the last HU-16 was used in the United States Coast Guard in 1983. Civilian versions designated as the
Grumman G64 Albatross
can still be seen flying today.
