About this snake:
The Rosy Boa is one of two species of Boas native to the
US. The Rosy Boa feeds mostly on small mammals and birds which
it kills by constriction. When disturbed it may roll into a ball,
like the ball python, with its head in the center of the coils.
It is not an aggressive snake but it does have the ability to
excrete a rotten-smelling substance from a scent glad located
near the cloaca that it uses, like a skunk, as a form of defense.
The Rosy Boa is normally about 3 feet long and it will not
grow more than 4 feet. Female Rosy Boa's typically breed every
other year. The eggs hatch internally in autumn which means that
the young are born live. There are generally 5-10 young that
are about 12 inches long born at one time. An interesting thing
to note about the Rosy Boa is that it can survive on water from
the bodies of the animals it consumes and has no need for a permanent
water source.
