About Alligators
Alligators and crocodilians, are large, lizard-like animals with powerful tails that are both used in defense and in swimming. Their eyes, ears, amd nostrils are placed on top of the long head and project slightly above the water when the reptiles float to the surface of the water, as they often do.
Alligators and crocodiles have a similar appearence, but there are several important physical characteristics that that are unique to each type. Crocodilian order of the Reptiles are divided into four diferent types, they are ALLIGATORIDAE, CROCODYLIDAE, GAVIALIDAE and the CAIMANS. They are grouped in these categories according to observed differences in their teeth, scales, and skulls. The shape of their head is the most obvious difference between alligators and crocodiles. Also the alligator's jaw and skull is shorter and wider than the crocodile's.
Alligators are carnivorous and live along edges of relatively large bodies of water such as lakes, swamps, and rivers. They dig burrows in which they escape from danger and in which they hibernate during the cold weather.
What is a Reptile?
Reptiles are an animal class of air breathing vertebrates that have scaley bodies and internal fertilization. They fall within an intermediate position of evolutionary development between the
Amphibians
and the
Mammals
and
Birds
. The living lineage of this animal class (Reptilia) includes the Turtles, Crocodiles, Snakes, Lizards, and Tuatra. The extinct reptiles include the
Dinosaurs
, Ichthyosaurs, and Pterosaurs.
Reptiles are Cold Blooded and have skin that is usually dry with few if any glands. They have four limbs protruding from the side, except for the Snakes. Though they are most abundant in the tropics, they can be found in all the warm and temperate regions. They span a variety of lengths from 34 millimeters (Gecko) to 9 meters (Anaconda Snake). The largest Turtle (Leatherback) weighs around 680 kilograms.
